The main advantage of using Linux is the distribution of user privileges in the system.
Linux users does not have the superpower to do whatever it can. And the superpower is given to only the "root". So if a virus wants to be installed in a Linux system; a general user will not be able to permit it. And it may can damage that users local file and programs but cannot damage or change anything system-wide.
But in windows users are given the administrator privilege which can harm the system anytime.
Monoculture Effect
Generally a diversity in the IT world will always help to protect their users.
But Windows OS runs in a Monoculture environment and there is no variety of choices for the users.
But thank to god that there are many platform available in Linux. There are distribution like; Ubuntu, Debian, Gentoo and others. And the beauty is they are all open source.
Strong Community of Developers
OS like; Windows and MAC are basically developed by their paid developers. So whatever security flaws are there an only be caught by those limited number of developers only. But in Linux there are countless number of developers who are trying 24X7 to fix problems associated with a Linux distribution. Not even this, a user also can fix and repair bugs that present in a Linux Distribution.
Number of Users
Some overly crowded OS like; MAC or Windows makes the system less secure than a Linux operating system which has less number of users.
